49ers at Packers: MNF NFL Week 6 Betting Preview and Pick

No team has been hit harder by injuries this season than the San Francisco 49ers, and that includes losing quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo for the year a few weeks ago. Now this is just an also-ran club. The Niners are 9.5-point underdogs on Monday to close Week 6 at the Green Bay Packers, who are on Monday Night Football about as often as possible because of their popularity and superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Who will come out on top in these 49ers vs Packers odds?

Green Bay is our against the spread pick (as long as under 10) and the total is 46.5. It’s the first meeting between the teams since 2015 – Garoppolo was still a Patriots backup QB — when the Packers ended a four-game losing streak in the series. Colin Kaepernick was the 49ers’ quarterback in that one.

Why Green Bay will cover the 49ers vs Packers odds

There are reports of some discord between Rodgers and his coaching staff as the two-time NFL MVP hasn’t been shy about criticizing the play-calling at times. If Green Bay misses the playoffs, don’t be surprised if head coach Mike McCarthy is a goner.

The Packers’ 31-23 loss Sunday in Detroit was quite unusual. Rodgers threw for 442 yards and three touchdowns despite missing two top receivers to injury, but he lost two fumbles for only the third time in his Hall of Fame career. Even more stunning was the usually reliable Mason Crosby missing four field goals and a PAT. No kicker had done that in the NFL since 1997. Also, it’s not like the weather was a factor (the Lions play in a dome). Crosby does still have a job, but he won’t Tuesday if he has another lousy game. The Packers are quickly falling down the Super Bowl futures.

San Francisco betting notes for Monday

When one NFL team outgains another by nearly 230 yards and has 23 more first downs, it should win in a blowout. However, the 49ers did both last week against previously winless Arizona and lost 28-18 at home because of five turnovers. Garoppolo’s replacement, C.J. Beathard, was responsible for four with two picks and two fumbles.

To make matters worse, top running back Matt Breida, among the NFL rushing leaders entering last week, left with an ankle sprain and isn’t likely for Monday. He’s the top guy because the one who was supposed to be, Jerick McKinnon, tore his ACL in August. Receivers Dante Pettis and Marquise Goodwin also are likely to sit again. It has been that kind of year in San Francisco.
