Sunday Night Football: Rams vs. Broncos Picks and Preview

Matchup Preview

Two preseason conference favorites who tripped out of the gate meet under the lights at Empower Field at Mile High. Both the Rams and Broncos opened 0-1 before bouncing back in Week 2, and now they collide in a primetime spot loaded with situational edges for the home team. Los Angeles is a short-field favorite here — Bovada has the Rams at -1.5 — but the number tells you this game is a coin flip with a lean, not a mismatch.

The Rams walk into Denver banged up and on a short week. They played Monday night, now travel to altitude on quick rest, and are set to be without WR1 Puka Nacua for a second straight game (doubtful, groin) plus pass rusher Myles Garrett on IR. Matthew Stafford leaned hard on Davante Adams in Week 2 — eight catches, 195 yards, two scores against the Giants — but that production ran into a much softer secondary than the one waiting for him Sunday.

Denver, meanwhile, is getting healthier at exactly the right time. J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey are both off the injury report, giving Sean Payton a real backfield again, and the defense that led the NFL in sacks each of the last two seasons gets to tee off on a shorthanded Rams offensive line. Nik Bonitto lines up almost exclusively over the left tackle, where Alaric Jackson has been nursing a knee issue — that's the matchup that can wreck Stafford's timing early.

The other side of the ball is where Denver hangs its hat: Patrick Surtain II is the best cornerback in football, and the Broncos haven't allowed a 100-yard receiver all season. Adams has historically gone quiet against Surtain, and with Nacua sidelined, the Rams' passing game gets awfully thin awfully fast. Bo Nix doesn't need to be a hero — he just needs to protect the ball and let the run game and defense set the terms.

Weather adds one more wrinkle. It's a warm, dry evening in Denver, but forecasters expect breezy southeast winds with gusts pushing 25 mph — enough to nudge a passing-heavy total downward and reward the team playing on schedule. Add the altitude and the short-week travel for L.A., and the situational math keeps pointing toward the Broncos.

The Picks

Pick 1 — Broncos +1.5 (-110, Bovada): This is a scheduling bet as much as a matchup bet. The Rams played Monday and now travel to 5,280 feet on a short week, while Denver gets home-field noise, a rested defense, and a backfield back at full strength. Getting a home team this good as a favorite-in-disguise underdog is value — take the points at Bovada.

Pick 2 — Under 44.0 (-110, Bovada): Everything about this game screams grind. Denver's passing attack has leaned short and conservative, Surtain and company have kept every opponent under 100 receiving yards, and the Rams are down to Adams plus depth pieces with Nacua out. Toss in gusty winds up to 25 mph and neither of these teams' games has gone over the total yet this season. The Under is the cleanest read on the board at Bovada.

Pick 3 — Kyren Williams Anytime Touchdown (-110, Bovada): With Nacua out and the passing game facing Surtain, expect McVay to lean on the ground game and shorten the field. Williams is the Rams' clear early-down and goal-line back, and in a game likely decided in the red zone he's the safest bet to find paydirt. At -110 for anytime TD, he's the best-priced high-usage scorer at Bovada.

Best Bet

The strongest play is Broncos +1.5 — a rested, healthy, elite-defense home team getting points against a banged-up opponent stumbling in on a short week at altitude is exactly the spot you want to be on.
