Super Bowl XLIX Betting Recap: Seahawks Fall to Patriots

As the New England Patriots marched to a 28-24 victory in Super Bowl XLIX sports bettors around the world got into the action, betting millions on the hundreds of available bets, covering every aspect of the game.

The Seattle Seahawks kicked off the Super Bowl online betting action two weeks ago, opening as two-point favorites. But a volatile betting line, driven by heavy betting on New England, quickly moved the Patriots to favorites by as many as two points, with the point spread varying widely at the online sportsbooks by game time.

But the variation in spreads made little difference, as the Patriots’ four-point margin of victory easily covered at sportsbooks where New England was favored by as much as two points.

Sports bettors playing the OVER on the point total in this year’s Super Bowl were also rewarded, as the total finished at 52.

The point total opened at 48.5, before slipping to 47.5 by game time at the online sportsbooks. But despite the slide, this weekend’s Super Bowl marked just the third time this season that the point total was pegged at greater than 47 in a matchup featuring the Seahawks, but was the ninth time in New England’s last 12 that the total was set at 47.5 or greater.

After opening as a 3/2 bet to claim his third Super Bowl MVP, Patriots QB Tom Brady paid off with odds of 8/5 at game time, well ahead of Seahawks QB Russell Wilson and Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch, who took the field sporting odds of 7/2 and 4/1, respectively.

Idina Menzel opened the evening by singing The Star-Spangled Banner, completing the national anthem in two minutes, four seconds. That was music to the ears of sports bettors who took the OVER in the Super Bowl props bet covering how long it would take the Tony Award-winning singer to perform the anthem, which sported a betting line set at two minutes, one second.

For the second year in a row and the third time in as many Super Bowl appearances, the Seahawks won the coin toss. It also marked the third time that Seattle won the toss with Tails, while the Patriots dropped to 1-5 in the coin toss in their last six Super Bowl appearances.

Patriots WR Brandon LaFell opened the scoring, catching an 11-yard TD pass from Brady to give New England a 7-0 lead midway through the second quarter. It was a particularly sweet reception for sports bettors who took LaFell as the first player to score a TD in Super Bowl props betting, with the winning bet paying off at 12/1 at the online sportsbooks.

WR Julian Edelman’s three-yard TD reception capped the scoring in this year’s Super Bowl, with a Patriots TD pass paying off at 3/1 in Super Bowl props betting on what the last score of the game would be.

As the clock ticked down towards a Patriots victory, New England coach Bill Belichick was on the receiving end of the traditional Gatorade shower, with the Pats’ veteran bench boss getting doused with Blue Gatorade, rewarding bettors with longshot odds of 15/2.

The color of Gatorade matched the blue Patriots hoodie that Belichick wore during the game, which paid off at an attractive 7/4, well back of the 1/2 odds which favored grey as the coach’s hoodie color of choice.
